What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a profession in the heath care field, concerned with human function, movement and maximising potential.

Typically individuals consult a physiotherapist for management of medical problems or other health related conditions that cause pain, limit ability to move or function optimally.

Physiotherapists use manual techniques to promote, maintain and restore physical wellbeing.

Physiotherapy may involve the treatment of various conditions, in a wide scope of settings. Examples include: musculoskeletal and sports injuries, neurological conditions such as stroke or head injury, paediatrics, medical and surgical procedures, chest care in conditions such as pneumonia or chronic bronchitis, stress incontinence and geriatric (elderly) care.

Physiotherapists may work in hospitals, sports injury clinics, GP surgeries, schools and gyms.

Physiotherapists may use a variety of treatment modalities in their work. Manual treatments such as joint mobilisations, manipulations, massage and stretches are commonly used in musculoskeletal and sports injury work. Electrotherapy modalities such as ultrasound, TENS, interferential and laser are also frequently used to provide pain relief and/or promote healing.

Physiotherapists will commonly used heat and ice for therapeutic benefit. Acupuncture is also utilised as a treatment by many physiotherapists.

In many areas of their work, physiotherapists will use exercise as a treatment, whether for rehabilitation post injury or following neurological damage such as with strokes or head injuries. Exercises for pelvic floor strengthening may be taught. Breathing exercises are also a big part of the job of a chest care physiotherapist.

Postural re-education is an important role for physiotherapists in many areas of their work.

Physiotherapists will also work with patients to assist with integration back into social, domestic or work settings and can work with other health professionals to achieve optimal outcomes.
